The City of Lethbridge says it is continuing its multi-year effort to replace 10,000 manually read water meters.

Phase two resumes on April 2, 2025, which aims to upgrade 2,000 meters in the Heritage Heights neighbourhood.

The new meters are said to be much more efficient, with upgrades including:

  • Simpler data collection processes.
  • No need for staff to access properties for meter readings.
  • Fewer missed reads.
  • More accurate and consistent billing.

Property owners who require a new water meter will be contacted via email and Canada Post. Those who have the free Lethbridge Loop mobile app on iOS or Android devices will also be informed through that platform.

The free 30-minute appointment can be booked by contacting Lethbridge 311 Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The first phase of the program saw more than 2,200 old meters replaced between April and August 2024.

“We appreciate residents’ cooperation during phase one,” says Leanne Lammertsen, Water and Wastewater Operations Manager. “In those five months, we successfully upgraded 99 per cent of the targeted meters. With the insights gained from phase one, we’re confident we’ll achieve the same results in a shorter time frame this year.”

The City of Lethbridge sold the old meters for over $7,000 through GovDeals, a site that helps municipalities maximize the value or surplus inventory.
