Gas prices fall in Lethbridge after carbon tax ends

Apr 2, 2025 | 8:57 AM

Drivers across the country can fill up their tanks for less as the consumer carbon price ended on April 1, 2025.

As of 8:45 a.m. on April 2, GasBuddy.com reports that the lowest price for regular unleaded fuel in Lethbridge was at Costco, going for 123.9 cents per litre.

Not every place has come down by a wide margin yet as the city’s average is 139.9 c/L. Some are still as high as 158.9 c/L.

Still, fuel prices in Lethbridge have fallen by 16 c/L in just the last day, five cents compared to the same time last week and 22 cents from one year ago.

The average cost of regular gas across Alberta is 137.9 c/L, falling by 9.9 cent from last week.

Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally says, after years of pressure from the provincial government and federal Conservatives, Ottawa has “finally” scrapped its “punishing consumer carbon tax that has wreaked havoc on Canadians’ personal finances.”

“With the removal of this costly tax, Alberta drivers will save an average of $215 per year at the pumps. Our government expects that retailers will pass these tax savings on to Albertans in full,” says Nally.

He adds that the government will continue to use every tool at its disposal to ensure drivers are not being gouged at the pumps.

“We will be monitoring and reviewing pump prices for any wrongdoing, and take action if needed. Businesses found guilty of price gouging can be fined by the courts up to $300,000 or receive up to two years of jail time.”

Albertans who suspect unfair business practices can call the Report a Rip-off line at 1-877-427-4088.
