The Liberal Party of Canada has chosen its candidate for a southwestern Alberta riding.

John Bruinsma looks to become the party’s MP in Foothills

He provided the following answers to LNN in a questionnaire.

Why did you want to run in the 2025 federal election?

This is the most consequential election of my lifetime. I felt that I needed to provide an alternate Alberta voice to the long term concerns that would affect my Grandchildren and their generation, such that they may have the opportunities that my generation had and that no one is left behind in the possible upcoming turmoil.

Why did you choose to run for the Liberals?

I believe that Mark Carney is the only leader that can take us through these turbulent times of economic attacks based on his professional credentials, extensive experience and global recognition.

What personal or professional experience do you have that you feel would make you a good MP?

My well rounded education in Technology and Accounting, along with 35 years work experience in major Heavy Industrial Projects and Regulated Utilities, Crisis Management, and Finance would make me a good MP representing Alberta’s concerns to Parliament.

What would be a few of your top priorities if elected?

  • Balance federal trade goals with Alberta’s jurisdiction, economic needs, social stability, and environmental priorities.
  • Advocate directing tariff revenues to Provincial urban social programs to maintain healthcare, education, and community support, clearly communicating alignment with environmental and global commitments.
  • Secure Federal funding to enhance covered port facilities to meet international quality standards, streamline market access, and secure stronger global pricing.
  • Work with Alberta to champion “Right to Repair” laws allowing consumers and businesses freedom to repair devices, vehicles, and machinery without restrictive manufacturer control.
  • Address law enforcement challenges related to the mandatory notification requirement of Section C-196, while maintaining a careful balance between individual privacy rights and operational effectiveness of law enforcement.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I am reminded of JFK saying: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. With an impending crisis, Albertan’s and all Canadians can contribute to supporting each other and assisting in making Canada Strong. These can be simple things like purchasing local made products and supporting domestic agriculture. More difficult is taking the time to remain informed about trade issues and advocate for policies promoting economic resilience and robust social programs.
