Alberta RCMP cautioning against speeding as road conditions improve

Apr 3, 2025 | 1:21 PM

Alberta RCMP is reminding drivers to slow down.

As the weather gets warmer, and roads become clear, police say it is important to keep in mind the dangers of speeding. Unsafe speeds can risk collision and serious injury for all road users.

In 2024, Alberta RCMP issued 48,600 speeding tickets, and 4,283 in the month of April alone.

Mounties are reminding anyone in a vehicle to stay safe by leaving early to avoid rushing, following posted speed limits, keep road and traffic conditions in mind, and speak up if you are a passenger and feel the driver is being unsafe.

According to Transport Canada, 27 per cent of fatalities on the road involve speeding.

Alberta Transportation says approximately one in four fatal collisions involve unsafe speeds, and more than half of these fatal collisions occur in rural areas.

RCMP Sgt. Darrin Turnbull says you can stay safe this speeding season by respecting the speed limit, even when you’re in a hurry.
