Surgical Prehabilitation Program expands referral eligibility

Referral eligibility for Alberta Health Services’ (AHS) Prehabilitation Program has been expanded to include any adult in Alberta waiting for surgery.

The program was launched at Edmonton hospitals in December 2023 and prepares individuals for surgical procedures in an effort to improve patient outcomes and experiences.

Over the last year, the program has expanded to become a provincially coordinated service; Albertans scheduled for procedures at any AHS facility or chartered surgical facility are eligible to be referred to the program by their surgeon or health care provider. Self-referrals are also accepted.

“Prehab is supported by research and is considered emerging best practice, with a focus on reducing surgical risk and improving the patient’s surgical journey,” says Elaine Finseth, Associate Chief Allied Health Officer, AHS.

The program offers medical, emotional, physical and practical supports and focuses on four areas:

• Feeling ready: managing stress and daily routines.
• Being active: moving more and building strength.
• Eating well: knowing what foods will help prepare and recover.
• Living well: developing habits to improve health and well-being.

The program has received more than 2,700 patient referrals to date (Apr. 3) from 125 surgeons and providers, resulting in more than 4,600 patient visits, AHS reports.

AHS says patient feedback has been positive, with survey responses noting patients felt the program helped them feel ready for surgery and improved their recovery.

“Prehabilitation programs are essential for improving surgical outcomes and recovery,” says Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health. “By preparing patients physically and mentally before surgery, this approach enhances healing, reduces complications, and empowers individuals to actively participate in their recovery process.”

The AHS Prehabilitation Program is available to Albertans 18 years and up who are waiting for surgery in Alberta.
