April 7 is Green Shirt Day in Lethbridge

Wear a green shirt on Monday to show your support for organ and tissue donation.

April 7 has been declared by the City of Lethbridge as Green Shirt Day.

It was inspired by Logan Boulet of Lethbridge, who was one of the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash on April 6, 2018. He died the following day.

Logan was a registered organ donor and his contribution saved six lives, which created a movement that resulted in more than 150,000 people registering too.

Green Shirt Day is meant to honour, remember and recognize all of the victims and their families, as well as to continue Logan’s legacy of encouraging organ donation.

“It is still heartbreaking to think about the Humboldt Broncos bus crash,” says Mayor Blaine Hyggen. “As with most Canadians, I remember exactly where I was when I first heard the news.”

Council voted unanimously in March to make the declaration of Green Shirt Day.

Hyggen says it is better to keep bringing the item to council annually, as opposed to a one-time declaration, to continually highlight Logan’s impact and the importance of the cause.

The mayor adds, “Logan Boulet will always be remembered as a remarkable young man. He saved lives and his inspiring legacy will continue to save lives. I commend his parents, Toby and Bernie, and sister Mariko, for continuing efforts to promote Green Shirt Day.”

Earlier this month, a local advocacy group unveiled the 2025 Green Shirt Day logo, which you can see at the top of this article. Toby and Bernadine Boulet were also presented with the King Charles III Coronation Medal for their efforts in encouraging organ donation.
