Public urged to stay clear of fire wreckage after crews encounter issues

Apr 15, 2025 | 1:42 PM

The City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Service (LFES) is asking everyone to be mindful of crews at work.

Fire investigators and restoration teams have been on-site at the 1200 block of Pacific Circle West since two homes in the Garry Station neighbourhood were destroyed in a fire on Saturday, April 12.

The City of Lethbridge says it understands that people are curious, but some residents have been actively impeding their work.

“During Saturday’s fire response in Garry Station, onlookers and vehicle traffic significantly disrupted and delayed access for responders from LFES, Lethbridge Police Service and utility partners,” the municipality says. “One driver collided with a police vehicle while distracted by the fire, and utility crews were hindered in reaching the area to shut off gas lines.”

They add that these situations are not just inconvenient, they are dangerous.

“Every second counts during an emergency. With strong winds common in Lethbridge, the risk of fire spreading quickly increases – making rapid response even more critical.”

The public is asked to keep the following advice in mind:

  • Avoid active fire and emergency scenes.
  • Keep roadways clear for emergency vehicles. If lights are flashing behind you, move to the side and make room for emergency vehicles to pass.
  • Follow all detours and instructions from emergency personnel.

The fire caused an estimated $1.75 million in damages. Nobody was hurt.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
