Students across Canada to participate in mock federal vote

Young Canadians will get their first opportunity to participate in an election.

CIVIX has partnered with Elections Canada to hold the Student Vote for the 2025 federal election.

CIVIX CEO Lindsay Mazzucco says the mock vote is designed to introduce students to politics and foster a habit of democratic participation.

Students get to explore the parties and platforms, debate issues, and cast ballots for the actual candidates in their local electoral districts.

“Student Vote is more than a simulation — it’s a chance for students to see themselves as active citizens and future voters,” says Mazzucco. “Research shows that early experiences with voting can build the habits and confidence that lead to lifelong participation — and teachers across Canada continue to make that possible.”

More than 7,000 schools across the country will participate. Depending on which schools register, it will include youths in Grades 4-12.

The Student Vote can sometimes have different results from the actual election.

In 2021, for example, the students would have elected a minority Liberal government with 118 seats and 24 per cent of the popular vote. The NDP would have won the popular vote at 28 per cent, securing 108 seats and the status of Official Opposition. The Conservatives could have finished third in terms of seat count at 88, generating 25 per cent of ballots cast.

In the real election in 2021, the Liberals won a majority government while the Conservatives formed the Official Opposition.

The results of the Student Vote will be released after polls close on election day, April 28.
