Controlled burn scheduled for Iron Springs Transfer Station in Lethbridge County

Apr 23, 2025 | 9:07 AM

Residents of Lethbridge County may notice some smoke this week, but there is no need to be concerned.

The County says, as part of annual maintenance at the Iron Springs Transfer Station, a controlled burn will begin this week at the facility, weather permitting. Crews will burn yard waste and untreated wood.

The Transfer Station is located approximately 15 kilometres north of Picture Butte.

Officials with Lethbridge County say steps have been taken to ensure the controlled burn is conducted safely.

“To facilitate a safe burn, the contractors have applied for a burn permit and have completed a fire safety plan to identify and address risk factors,” says Lethbridge County. “They have also created a fire break around the site and have assembled a number of equipment and water trucks to extinguish the burn. If wind speeds exceed 25 kilometres per hour, the contractor will extinguish the fire until conditions improve.”

Burning permits are required for any controlled burning and Lethbridge County offers them free of charge on its website.
