Man charged in ‘random and unprovoked’ assault of two Lethbridge seniors

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has put a man behind bars following a pair of assaults.

Just before 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, police received reports of a physical altercation on the 700 block of 1 Ave South.

Witnesses say a younger man struck an older man in the head. The 76-year-old victim fell to the ground and was treated in hospital for a serious head injury.

The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of police.

About half an hour later, LPS says a 69-year-old man was walking along a path in Indian Battle Park when he was approached by an unknown man.

The victim offered a friendly greeting, but the suspect reportedly “became irate and began yelling.”

The senior continued his walk when LPS alleges the suspect struck him in the head, resulting in soft tissue injuries. The 69-year-old was able to return home.

The suspect fled the area and was arrested the following day in the downtown area.

According to LPS, the suspect is unknown to both victims and the alleged assaults were random and unprovoked.

Kurtis Lauren Babb, 39, of Coalhurst, is charged with one count each of aggravated assault and assault.

Following a Judicial Interim Release hearing, Babb was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court today.
