Bill 54

Alberta government changing election rules

Apr 30, 2025 | 4:55 PM

The Alberta government says it is looking at a number of changes to its election rules.

Bill 54, if passed, would ban electronic tabulators, require unofficial vote counts to be completed within 12 hours of polls closing, and eliminate the practice of vouching for someone at a polling station.

Justice Minister Mickey Amery says the changes are to strengthen public trust in the integrity of Alberta’s elections.

The bill also includes new finance rules that allow corporations and unions to fund political parties, candidates and third-party election advertising.
