Public library funding maintained in 2025 provincial budget

May 2, 2025 | 3:41 PM

If passed, Alberta’s Budget 2025 will maintain its funding levels for public libraries by investing $39 million to support them.

The funding will be distributed to 225 library boards across the province, including seven intermunicipal boards, municipalities, Métis settlements and First Nation communities.

“Libraries have always played an important role in the lives of Albertans and our communities. Budget 2025 maintains funding for local libraries at an all-time high and in turn helps those who make libraries possible keep up the great work,” commented Minister of Municipal Affairs Ric McIver.

The government says libraries are “lifelines for learning, connection and discovery,” and with this funding, they should be equipped to continue offering vital services like basic computer skills courses, community events and more.

There are 327 public library branches across Alberta, governed by 225 municipal, intermunicipal, and First Nations public library boards and seven regional library systems.
