RCMP TIPS

Reduce your risk of auto-related theft this summer

May 6, 2025 | 3:26 PM

The Alberta RCMP are sharing tips to help residents prevent theft of, and from, their vehicles this summer.

In 2024, police recorded 8,272 auto thefts in Alberta RCMP jurisdiction, plus 5,998 thefts from vehicles. Of this total, 643 auto thefts and 502 thefts from vehicles occurred in May alone.

RCMP report that trucks are the most commonly stolen vehicle.

The following habits and routines can help reduce your chances of being a victim of vehicle-related thefts:

  • Always lock your vehicle, even if you are just stepping out for a moment.
  • Never leave keys, garage door openers, or important documents with personal identifying information in your vehicle. Garage door openers or keys can be stolen, along with personal identifying documents, to enter your home.
  • Always close the windows when leaving your vehicle, even when it’s hot outside.
  • Park your vehicle in a locked garage. If unable to do so, try parking within sight and in a well-lit area. This may mean leaving outdoor lights on.
  • Ensure personal belongings, loose change and valuables are not stored in your vehicle. These items can entice opportunistic thieves.
