Town of Coaldale approves 2.85% tax hike

Residents of Coaldale will find themselves paying a bit more in property taxes this year.

During its meeting on May 5, 2025, Coaldale Town Council approved the Town’s 2025 Property Tax Bylaw.

It includes a 2.85 per cent increase in the residential property tax rate.

If your home is around the average assessed value of $366,000, your bill will go up by $204 per year, or $17 monthly.

Approximately two-thirds of that increase ($133) will go to the provincial government for the provincial education and Green Acres tax levies.

The municipality says, “On average, however, residents in the Town of Coaldale will pay 6% less in annual municipal property taxes than residents in neighbouring Lethbridge.”

The non-residential mill rate, which is paid by businesses, will increase by 3.2 per cent (from 9.69 to 10 per cent).

Mayor Jack Van Rijn says council is committed to keeping property taxes low to attract new residents and support the growth of its commercial and industrial sectors.

“Still, like many municipalities in our province, Coaldale continues to face increased costs related to inflation, infrastructure maintenance, and service delivery. The adjustments made in the Town’s 2025 Property Tax Bylaw therefore strike a careful balance between addressing these pressures and keeping our tax environment competitive – especially for local businesses,” says Van Rijn.

The mayor adds, “This approach ensures we can continue to invest in the services, programs, and amenities our residents expect, while also supporting long-term economic growth and stability.”
