A group of local amateur wrestlers has proven that they are anything but amateurs.

The Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association (LAWA) is celebrating the accomplishments of some of its athletes.

Thomas Ellis-Toddington is the new Greco-Roman National Champion in the 71 kilogram weight class after going undefeated at the 2025 U19 Nationals in Calgary.

He will also be one of Alberta’s representatives at the Canada Summer Games (CSG) after winning the CSG trials this past weekend.

“We’re so proud of Tom and his love of the sport that led to these results,” says LAWA Coach Shawn Daye-Finley. “He has put in the work and dedication to get to the highest level in his age group in the country. It’s a pleasure to watch him compete and even a bigger pleasure to coach him.”

Ellis-Toddington was among several locals who made it far at recent competitions.

Kade Linford finished fourth in the U-17 Greco-Roman event at nationals.

In the CSG trials, Kayden Mellafont was in second place at 77 kg and will serve as an alternate for Team Alberta. Sydney Shields won a bronze medal at the trials in the 73 kg women’s division, Colby Seely was fourth in 60 kg, and Jack Higgins was fifth in 77 kg.

The CSG takes place August 8-25, 2025, in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
