Separation vote would harm economy, regardless of result, Calgary chamber says

The head of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce says a referendum on separation would inflict economic damage on Alberta and Canada, regardless of the result.

Chamber President and CEO Deborah Yedlin said Friday businesses are not interested in the uncertainty it would cause.

She said companies spend money with the assurance that their investments will pay off years beyond any given election.

Yedlin’s comments come after Atco CEO Nancy Southern said Asian partners have already put off a final investment decision on a hydrogen project in Alberta because of separation talk.

Talk of separation has picked up steam after Premier Danielle Smith introduced a bill that drastically lowers the bar for citizen-led referendums.

Smith has said a referendum on various citizen-led initiatives will likely go to a vote next year.
