A new research partnership between Canada and the United States aims to improve the relationship between the two countries.

The New North America Initiative (NNAI), led by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy, brings together academics from the nations.

Together, they will address the “significant gap” in dedicated research into the study of Canada-U.S. relations and policy.

Alberta’s Minister of Advanced Education Rajan Sawhney says the NNAI will help people to better anticipate, manage and mitigate U.S. policy shifts.

It will connect thought leaders, government officials, the private sector and think tanks to share new ideas on international relations at a time when the relationship has been strained.

“The New North America Initiative will help Alberta take strategic and thoughtful action as we navigate relations between Canada and the U.S. This initiative will open new research pathways and help establish strong new connections and partnerships, while also empowering and developing capacity for the next generation of students,” says Sawhney.

She continues, “There is very little dedicated research directed to the study of Canada-U.S. relations at Canadian universities, and increasing our knowledge on this topic right now is crucial.”

A few Albertan post-secondary schools are part of the NNAI, including the Universities of Lethbridge, Calgary and Alberta, as well as Mount Royal University. A spokesperson with the U of L was unable to elaborate on their involvement at this time.

Participating American schools are the universities of Nebraska and Colorado, Arizona State University and Rice University.
