Bipartisan Senate resolution introduced to recognize Canada-U.S. partnership

WASHINGTON — A resolution with bipartisan support was introduced in the United States Senate today to recognize the U.S.-Canada partnership, a relationship badly strained by President Donald Trump’s tariffs and threats of annexation.

Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota and Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine introduced the symbolic resolution with support from eight other lawmakers.

A news release says it recognizes the relationship between the United States and Canada is critical to promoting peace and expanding global economic opportunities.

Cramer says Canada is a crucial economic and national security partner and also America’s closest ally.

King says he knows the current situation presents “many unfortunate challenges” but he looks forward to strengthening the close alliance.

The resolution comes as some states and organizations share concerns about a drop in the number of Canadian visitors coming to the U.S.
