A provincial research funding group has put a local man at the head of its table.

Alberta Innovates has named Dr. Mike Mahon as its permanent Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. He has been the group’s interim CEO since July 2024.

Mahon was previously the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lethbridge between 2010-2023.

The University says he was instrumental in creating the Dhillon School of Business, establishing a multi-million dollar partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, was an honourary member of the Kainai Chieftainship of the Blood Tribe, and served on the boards of numerous agencies relating to education and athletics.

Mahon says it is an honour to lead Alberta Innovates, an organization with more than a century of impact for Albertans.

“Like a head coach, I’m fortunate to work alongside an incredible team of talented individuals committed to delivering meaningful results for this province,” says Mahon. “Since last summer, I’ve engaged with countless innovators and leaders across Alberta, and I am excited about the tremendous opportunities ahead.”

He was unanimously elected the CEO of Alberta Innovates.

Board Chair Tony Williams says it became clear that Mahon has earned the confidence of their employees and community partners alike.

“His vision for the future and his proven leadership during a period of significant transformation make him the right person to continue to lead Alberta Innovates forward. The Board is fully confident in his ability to position Alberta as a leader in innovation advancement,” says Williams.

Alberta Innovates is primarily funded by the provincial government and invests in research, as well as providing coaching and connections to innovators.
