Southern Alberta farmers ahead of the curve for seeding

May 25, 2025 | 6:00 AM

A new provincial report shows that farmers in the south region have made more progress on spring seeding than everywhere else in Alberta.

As of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, it says 86.7 per cent of all crops in the area had been planted. That is compared to the provincial average of 73.1 per cent.

It is also about 12 to 13 per cent higher than the five and 10-year averages for southern Alberta at this time of year.

The region’s farmers are nearly done seeding potatoes (99.5 per cent), dry peas (95.6 per cent) and durum (90.7 per cent).

It is not all good news for southern Alberta, though, as the area remains a bit drier. About 53.5 per cent of farmland has good-to-excellent surface soil moisture, while regions such as Central are at nearly 90 per cent.

The full Alberta Crop Report can be found on the Government of Alberta’s website.
