90% of Alberta’s measles cases are in South Zone, standing advisory issued
Alberta Health Services (AHS) is warning of a “widespread” potential exposure risk to measles across all communities in the South Zone.
The health agency has issued a standing measles exposure advisory for the region, which is in effect immediately until further notice. During this advisory, AHS will no longer issue separate site-specific exposure advisories.
“Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to manage a significant number of cases of measles across the South Zone, including in individuals with no known exposure source. This indicates underreporting of measles disease to AHS, and a widespread potential exposure risk across all communities in the zone,” reads a notice from AHS.
As of Friday, May 23, 408 confirmed measles cases had been reported in the South Zone, representing 90.7 per cent of all cases in the province this year and nearly 19 per cent of all cases in Canada.
