Alberta to begin mandatory mussel inspections June 1

May 26, 2025 | 11:24 AM

Anyone planning on bringing boats with them as they travel this summer will need to undergo an inspection before entering Alberta.

Starting June 1, Alberta will require mandatory inspections for zebra and quagga mussels on watercrafts for residents and visitors entering the province through their eastern and southern borders.

Currently, Alberta is free of both mussel species, but reports are increasing across Canada and the United States of the invasive species’ presence and its impact of ecosystems, shorelines, and infrastructure.

Eleven inspection stations will be opened near the borders, anyone bringing a watercraft into Alberta must be inspected within seven days or face a fine up to over $4,000.

The mandatory inspections will last June 1 to September 30.
