Provincial government budgets funding for University of Calgary veterinary diagnostic laboratory

May 27, 2025 | 6:00 AM

The province says it has budgeted $9.5 million over three years to keep what it calls “a full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory ” operating at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The government says in a release that this will allow the lab to offer more services and keep staff. It will also allow for more investigations into disease and testing for more types of pathogens.

The same release goes on to say that “this funding will ensure Alberta’s livestock producers and veterinarians have access to in-province diagnostic testing, leading to quicker results at more affordable rates.”

“For almost 30 years, Alberta livestock producers and veterinarians had to send diagnostic samples to Saskatchewan or other provinces to get results. This funding will ensure they can get results much quicker, allowing for faster responses to potential animal health-related threats. In uncertain times, this ensures the safety and wellbeing of our livestock sector and reassures international markets that our animals are healthy and safe for import,” says Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson in a release from the province.

The funding breaks down to $3.1 million in both 2025-26 and 2026-27, then $3.3 million in 2027-28.

The province also says in its release, that Alberta has more cattle than any other province, the second-most sheep and lambs among all the provinces, and is home to ten per cent of Canada’s pig population.
