Kip Kangogo is back in Lethbridge after a monumental marathon win.

He was the first-place winner of the Calgary Marathon, held on Sunday, May 25, 2025.

Finishing nearly four minutes ahead of the runner-up, Kangogo crossed the line ahead of all 1,938 other competitors.

He ran 42.2 kilometres in two hours, 28 minutes and 42 seconds.

“It was super exciting, you know, I’m now 45 and still mixing with the young bucks,” says Kangogo. “I had my family down there, and they were at the finishing line. My son is 14 months, and the rest of my kids, so it was super exciting.”

Kangogo is no stranger to marathons, having completed the BMO Vancouver Marathon just three weeks prior, coming in at 10th place.

The long-distance runner tells LNN that it is normal for him to run upwards of 40 kilometres while training, although he sometimes breaks that up into intervals.

He is a support staff member at Chinook High School and says he loves being an inspirational figure to the students.

“The kids are always like, OK, there is a staff member who just won [the] Calgary Marathon, so it gives them something to look up to. You become a role model, like an example.”

The Calgary Marathon also featured several other southern Albertans who finished in the top 200:

  • Richard Larouche (Lethbridge): 7th
  • Cassandra DeWinter (Lethbridge): 28th
  • Chris Chabot (Taber): 97th
  • Rob Casper (Coadale): 144th
  • Emma Fehr (Stirling): 151st
  • Travis Rapuano (Medicine Hat): 155th
  • Heloise Shrives (Medicine Hat): 183rd
  • Martin Peterson (Picture Butte): 188th

Kangogo says he plans to run at least a few more races this summer.
