City of Lethbridge contributes $1.2 million to community projects

More than two dozen initiatives across the community have received funding from the City of Lethbridge.

The municipality has announced money for 26 projects through two grant programs:

  • The Make-Your-Mark (MYM) one-time funding grant, which caters to small and mid-sized projects
  • The Community Capital Project Grant (CCPG), which supports larger projects that require matching funds

The largest grant, from the CCPG, went to the University of Lethbridge, which will put $200,000 towards the construction of a Multi-Sport Dome. It is planned to have a full-sized synthetic turf field for field sports, two versatile sports courts for basketball, volleyball and other indoor games, as well as a four-lane running track. The total cost of this project is over $13.7 million.

The Lethbridge Sport Council will use $25,000 through the MYM grant to purchase a sanitization system and storage space for redistributing sports equipment.

“We know that access to equipment is one of the biggest barriers to sport participation for many families,” says Susan Eymann, Executive Director, Lethbridge Sport Council. “This project allows us to safely clean and store donated gear so it can be reused by kids who need it. It’s about making sure every child has the chance to play.”

The CCPG program was undersubscribed during and immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic as groups were hindered in their ability to complete projects. This led to the fund accumulating an unspent balance of $600,000.

In December 2024, council approved the creation of the MYM program. It received 57 applications, totalling more than $2.2 million in requested funds.

Some of the other approved projects from the MYM grant include:

  • A creative hub for the BIPOC Foundation
  • Accessibility upgrades at the Hungarian Canadian Old Timers’ Society
  • Communication boards at playgrounds for the Lethbridge School Division
  • A new shuttle bus for Nord-Bridge Seniors

The CCPG awarded more than $600,000 in grants to six projects, including:

  • A multi-sport dome at the University of Lethbridge
  • A new playground at West Coulee Station
  • A welding facility at Winston Churchill High School
