Cougar encounter prompts campground closures at Waterton

Parks Canada is taking action after a close encounter with a cougar in Waterton Lakes National Park.

They say a cougar approached two campers at Bertha Bay campground and “showed interest” in their dog.

As a result, camping will not be permitted at the Bertha Bay and Boundary Bay campgrounds until further notice.

“Bertha (Falls and Lake) Trail, Bertha Lake backcountry campground and Lakeshore Trail remain open. Special caution is recommended while travelling in these areas,” says Parks Canada.

All recreators in the national park are advised to keep children close by, have dogs on a leash or leave them at home, travel in groups, carry bear spray and know how to use it, and to remain alert at all times – especially at dawn and dusk.

Cougar sightings can be reported to the Parks Canada dispatch at 1-888-927-3367.
