Chiefs of the Sovereign First Nations of Treaty No. 8 Condemn Bill C-5

Jun 16, 2025 | 1:25 PM

The Chiefs of the Sovereign First Nations of Treaty 8 have released a statement condemning Bill C-5.

Legislation introduced under the bill would allow for the fast-tracking of resource development projects under the label of national interest.

The leaders of the Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta argue Ottawa bypassed First Nations when drafting the bill, and is accusing the government of overreach, constitutional neglect, and treaty violations.

Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi says the bill demonstrates a strategy of imposing poly on Treaty people that would take years to fight in court.

Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Chief Sheldon Sunshine says the rights of treaty peoples pre-exist with the treaties themselves and that Ottawa has conflated treaty rights with inherent rights.
