Elk Valley RCMP have confirmed that a 40-year-old U.S. citizen from Big Fork, Montana, died in a collision near the B.C.-Alberta border.

It occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Friday, June 20, approximately 10 kilometres south of Fernie.

They say he was travelling from the U.S.–Canada border to Calgary to visit his girlfriend, who later attended the scene.

She was supported by RCMP members, Victim Services, and staff at Elk Valley Hospital. His family has been notified through U.S. Embassy contacts in Vancouver.

The other driver, a 49-year-old woman from Okotoks, Alberta, was seriously injured and was rushed to hospital in Fernie. Her family has been in contact with both the hospital and Elk Valley RCMP.

The RCMP says witnesses reported a vehicle matching her description driving erratically near Blairmore, Alberta, earlier that day.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors, but investigators say poor weather and road conditions may have played a role.

Investigators are seeking additional witnesses or dash camera footage related to either vehicle’s driving behaviour prior to the collision.
