Prompt call from neighbours key in extinguishing Lethbridge house fire

Jun 25, 2025 | 1:20 PM

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) was able to put out a residential blaze with minimal damage thanks to a call from a neighbour.

The fire occurred at a home on the 1500 block of 7 Avenue North around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24.

The next-door neighbours reported to LFES that smoke was coming from the ground-floor window and that a smoke alarm was sounding inside.

The homeowners were not present at the time.

Firefighters say they found a small fire in the residence that was quickly extinguished.

“LFES acknowledges the neighbours who called 9-1-1 after noticing smoke and hearing the alarm. Their prompt action helped prevent the fire from spreading and causing further damage,” reads a news release from LFES.

The fire was deemed to be accidental, with damage caused to only one room. Nobody was hurt.

The exact cause of the fire was not stated, but LFES is reminding residents to dispose of oily or solvent-soaked rags and paper products properly. They should be stored in a sealed metal container or disposed of safely, according to product instructions.
