Community Showcase opens at the Gallery

Jun 26, 2025 | 10:34 AM

A new showcase of artworks by local community partners has opened at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin.

“Over the past few years the Gallery has engaged community organizations requiring space, materials, or assistance in their artistic programming as part of our ongoing commitment to be more accessible and inclusive to the communities we serve,” said Gallery Associate Curator Adam Whitford, in a press release. “After years of art-making by members of these groups, we are pleased to celebrate the unique artistic voices of the participating artists by assembling their recent works for this Community Showcase.”

Officials say the Community Showcase features artworks by members of the Lethbridge Modern Quilt Guild and participants in Lethbridge Family Services’s outreach programming, as well as Recovery Alberta’s “A Brush with Art” program.

“Art has been an incredible leisure pursuit for the clients of Recovery Alberta, offering a powerful means of expression, healing, and personal growth,” said Annalise Durrant, Therapy Assistant with Recovery Alberta’s A Brush With Art Program. “The chance to have their artwork displayed in a professional gallery is both exciting and deeply validating for them. We are very grateful for our partnership with the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.:

“The Gallery’s generosity and support have brought meaningful opportunities and encouragement to those we serve in the community,” added Durrant.

“We are a group of young and seasoned quilters passionate and committed to showcasing a modern aesthetic in quilt making,” said Kathy Whitdouk, President of the Lethbridge Modern Quilt Guild. “We recently celebrated our 10 year anniversary and this showcase is a continuation of the celebration of our work that shows a small slice of the vast and varied talents of our members.”

A special reception to celebrate the artists participating in the Community Showcase will take place at the Gallery on Thursday, July 3 at 5:30 p.m. The showcase runs until July 26.
