Lethbridge County reissues fire ban

Jun 27, 2025 | 1:03 PM

Less than one week after lifting its previous fire ban, Lethbridge County has put it back in place.

They say, while the region did receive a “fair amount” of moisture last weekend, the Fire Weather Index shows that it did not have a lasting impact on moisture levels in the air or vegetation.

“The hot, dry conditions we have experienced this week have contributed to this heightened wildfire risk,” reads a notice from Lethbridge County.

Under the fire ban, all burning is prohibited, including:

  • Recreational campfires
  • Burning barrels and incinerators
  • Charcoal briquette barbecues
  • Any other open flame (i.e. burn pits, yard waste burning)
  • Fireworks

Anyone caught engaging in illegal burning will be subject to fines.

Residents can still, however, engage in the following activities:

  • Gas or propane heaters, stoves and barbecues that are CSA approved or UL certified
  • Wood pellet grills
  • Gas or propane firepits/rings that are CSA approved or UL certified

The County is reminding the public that burning garbage, rubber, plastic and any item other than untreated wood or yard debris is never permitted. These items can be disposed of at the City of Lethbridge Waste and Recycling Centre (must obtain an access card from the County first) or any of the transfer stations within the County (no card needed).

People are asked to dispose of smoking materials properly and never toss them into planters, ditches, or dry grass.

The announcement from Lethbridge County comes one day after the City of Lethbridge reinstated its own fire ban.
