Raymond Stampede set for June 30-July 1

Southern Albertans can take in the 123rd annual Raymond Stampede.

Organizers say, when Ray Knight hosted the country’s first rodeo in the community in 1902, his plan was to bring together local ranch hands to test their skills to find out who the best working cowboys were.

“That was when the spirit of competition began in Alberta and lives on today,” states a news release from Raymond Stampede President Robert Heggie.

The event continues this year with the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association and the U.S. Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association bringing in top talents from across the continent.

Some of the featured rodeo events include Bareback, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Ladies Breakaway Roping, Saddle Bronc, Tie-Down Roping, Ladies Barrel Racing and Bull Riding.

The top competitors will receive trophy buckles and $5,000. They will also work towards qualifying for the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton in October and the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas this December.

The Stampede begins at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30, and continues at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1. The rodeo will be on the corner of 500 Street North and 400 Street East (Hwy 845) in Raymond.
