A group of local taekwondo-ins are setting out to prove that they are the best in the world.

Legacy Tae Kwon Do in Lethbridge has announced that it will be sending 10 of its athletes to the TKDI World Cup in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 18-20, 2025.

The local competing athletes are:

  • Rylan Gibson
  • Nick Allison
  • Amanda Fox
  • Taylor Bailie
  • Makedah Allison
  • Carsen Fox
  • Anthony Gibson
  • Carter Gibson
  • Don Huxley
  • Rowan Bailie

The Canadian contingent will also consist of Nick and Olivia Suntjens of Calgary, as well as 13 others from B.C. and Ontario.

They will be joined by Lethbridge Grand Masters Darin Gibson and Colin Nonomura.

Gibson says their team can compete with anybody in the world.

“We’ve done a lot of travelling over the last 10 years to, kind of, get ring experience. We’ve been travelling – we were in Korea last summer, we’ve been to Toronto a couple of times, we’ve been to England for previous world championships and into the United States for tournaments,” says Gibson.

Rylan and Carter Gibson are defending world champions, having each won gold medals at the 2024 World Cup.

While the group will travel across the world to make a name for themselves at this year’s tournament, they will get to do so at home next year.

The TDKI World Cup in Lethbridge is set to take place July 4-5, 2026, at the Agri-food Hub and Trade Centre.

“It will be the biggest event I have ever endeavoured to take on,” says Gibson. “We’re very appreciative for the other countries that have hosted, but now, we feel it’s our turn so that we can provide those kinds of experiences for other countries, and also for Canada to host the best competitors in the world.”

He believes that anywhere from 500-600 competitors will take part in the tournament in Lethbridge, in addition to dozens of coaches.
