The City of Lethbridge is advising drivers that a series of roads in the downtown core will be closed Friday evening.

The annual Street Wheelers event kicks off Friday, July 11, bringing thousands and people and hundreds of classic cars to the city.

To accommodate the Controlled Cruise on Friday, the city says it will temporarily close the following roads between 6:00 p.m. and midnight.:

  • 3 Avenue South from 5 Street South to 20 Street South
  • 8 Street South from 1 Avenue South to 3 Avenue South
  • 1 Avenue South from 5 Street South to 8 Street South
  • 5 Street South from 1 Avenue South to 3 Avenue South
  • 20 Street South from 2 Avenue South to 3 Avenue South
  • 19 Street South from 2 Avenue South to 3 Avenue South
  • 2 Avenue South from 19 Street South to 20 Street South

“Nearby roads leading to the route will be marked as ‘local/business traffic only.’ Motorists are asked to drive with care and follow all posted signage. Parking restrictions will also be in place along the route from 5 p.m. – midnight,” reads a notice from the City of Lethbridge.

Traffic signals along northbound and southbound Stafford Drive South and 13 Street South will remain, but motorists should expect delays. Motorists are encouraged to use Scenic Drive South and Mayor Magrath Drive South as alternative routes.

Additional road closures will also be in effect on Sunday, July 13, from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. to accommodate the annual Street Wheelers Show and Shine event at Galt Gardens:

  • 5 Street South from 1 Avenue South to 3 Avenue South
  • 3 Avenue South from 5 Street South to 7 Street South

Due to an expected increase in illegal driving behaviours, the Lethbridge Police Service will be conducting additional enforcement. They are asking everyone to do their part to keep the streets safe.
