Alberta pushing for a “terrorist group” designation
Alberta is joining BC in calling on Ottawa to designate India’s Lawrence Bishnoi gang a terrorist group.
BC Premier David Eby sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney last month asking for the designation.
Police and politicians say there have been widespread extortion targeting South Asian business figures in Alberta and Ontario and that the crimes originate with the gang.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis say in a statement that they want to send a message to the gang — they’re not welcome in the province.
