Lethbridge County Fire Ban downgraded to Fire Restriction

Effective immediately, the Fire Ban in Lethbridge County has been downgraded to a Fire Restriction.

According to county officials, data shows the wildfire risk has lessened due to recent precipitation, while forecasting models and data show this trend may continue this week from lower temperatures and additional rain.

The county says moving from a Ban to a Restriction will now allow for some previously banned activities, while others remain prohibited to reduce wildfire risk.

Fires and devices allowed under the Fire Restriction: (Must meet the specifications in the County’s Fire Bylaw)

• Recreational campfires (in approved fire pits)
• Burn barrels and incinerators with spark arrestors
• Charcoal briquette barbecues
• Gas/propane heaters, stoves, barbecues (CSA/ULC approved)
• Wood pellet grills
• Gas/propane firepits/rings (CSA/ULC approved)

Still prohibited:

• Controlled burns that would normally require a burn permit (i.e. burn pits, yard waste burning)
• Fireworks

Fireworks and burn permits will not be issued under the Fire Restriction.

The county says it continually monitors weather conditions and other data to determine when burning restrictions are needed. Officials say these are put in place to reduce the risk of wildfires. Decisions are made in the interest of public safety and protection of property.

The county says a Fire Ban may be re-issued if conditions change. Stay up to date on the Fire Status by visiting lethcounty.ca, following the county on social media or signing up for the County Insider e-newsletter.

Additional Fire Safety Reminders:

• Burning garbage, rubber, plastic and any item other than untreated wood or yard debris (leaves, branches, weeds) is never permitted. All of these items can be disposed of at the City of Lethbridge Waste and Recycling Centre (must obtain an access card from the County first) or any of the transfer stations within the County (no card needed).
• Discard smoking materials properly—never toss them into planters, ditches or dry grass. Ensure they are fully extinguished.
