Wildfire smoke prompts air quality advisory in Lethbridge & southeast Alberta

Jul 15, 2025 | 9:34 AM

A special air quality statement has been issued for Lethbridge and the surrounding region.

Environment Canada says wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality.

Other local communities impacted by the advisory include Coaldale, Taber, Stirling, Foremost, Milk River, and Medicine Hat.

“As smoke levels increase, health risks increase. Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events,” says Environment Canada.

Exposure to wildfire smoke may result in mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.

Everyone is susceptible to these symptoms, but people who are particularly at risk include seniors, young children, pregnant women, those with existing illnesses or chronic health conditions, and people who work outdoors.

The public is asked to stay indoors whenever possible and to keep windows and doors shut. Anyone who must go outside is advised to use a face mask.
