Lethbridge-East MLA defends provincial funding record

Jul 16, 2025 | 12:20 PM

A local member of the Alberta Government says the province has provided significant amounts of funding to Lethbridge over the last couple of years.

Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf is responding to an article by LNN from July 15, which talks about the City of Lethbridge’s disappointment in being left out of the latest round of funding for affordable housing.

He provided the following letter to LNN, which is posted below in its full, unedited state:

“A recent article published by Lethbridge News Now suggested that Lethbridge was overlooked in the latest round of affordable housing funding announced by the provincial and federal governments. While it’s true that Lethbridge was not included in this specific round of allocations, it’s important to provide a fuller picture of the substantial investments our community has received over the past two years.

Since 2023, Lethbridge has benefited from over $675 million in provincial grant funding, supporting a wide range of initiatives—from housing and homelessness supports to education and infrastructure. In the area of affordable and supportive housing alone, the investments have been significant and targeted.

The Lethbridge Housing Authority received $10.2 million for a new supportive housing complex, and an additional $4.2 million to deliver wraparound services that help individuals experiencing homelessness transition into stable housing. These services include case management, landlord engagement, financial support, and access to clinical care—ensuring that housing is not just provided but sustained.

The Lethbridge Shelter was awarded $5 million to expand its capacity, while $3.38 million was granted to the Blackfoot Family Lodge Society to build Indigenous affordable housing. The Lethbridge and Region Community Housing Corporation received $3.45 million for affordable seniors housing, and Green Acres was awarded $595,000 for additional senior’s units. Another $2.23 million went to CONCEPT to construct new affordable housing units directly across from the Chinook Regional Hospital.

These investments reflect a strong and ongoing commitment to addressing housing needs in our city. While it is disappointing not to see Lethbridge included in this most recent announcement, it’s also important to recognize that many communities across Alberta are facing similar pressures. This round of funding prioritized projects that were shovel-ready and aligned with specific program criteria. Our office continues to work closely with local housing providers and the City of Lethbridge to ensure future proposals are well-positioned for success.

We also want to acknowledge the important work being done by our local organizations and municipal partners. Their dedication and collaboration have helped secure these investments and continue to make a real difference in the lives of Lethbridge residents.

We value open communication with media outlets and community members, and we’re always available to provide information, context, or comment on issues that matter to Lethbridge. We look forward to continuing a respectful and collaborative dialogue with all partners working to support our community.

Lethbridge has made real progress—and we’re committed to building on that momentum.”
