Environment Canada is advising residents in southern Alberta of a potential storm.

It has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for communities including Lethbridge, Coaldale, Taber, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass, Milk River, Cardston, Claresholm, and others.

Weather forecasters say thunderstorms are expected to develop late Friday afternoon or evening, July 18.

“These thunderstorms have the potential to become severe, bringing large hail, strong winds and heavy rain,” says Environment Canada.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce damaging hail, wind or rain.

If threatening weather approaches, they say to take cover in a basement or interior room.
