New home construction up 26% in Lethbridge

A new report shows that the pace at which homes are being built in Lethbridge is picking up.

That is according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), which says construction started on 363 dwellings in Lethbridge between January and June 2025, up 26 per cent from the same period last year.

This includes 173 single-detached homes (+63 per cent) and 190 homes of other types (+four per cent).

Just for June, housing starts in Lethbridge were up by 84 per cent on an annual basis to 59, including 49 single-detached homes (+188 per cent) and 10 others (-33 per cent).

The Alberta Government says the province is on track to surpass its 2024 record-setting year for new home construction.

Construction began on 27,902 units in the first six months of this year provincially, an increase of 30 per cent from the first half of 2024.

That means that, despite making up less than 13 per cent of the Canadian population, nearly one quarter of all new housing starts in Canada are in Alberta.

Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services Jason Nixon says the province’s record housing starts are a clear sign that the government’s approach is working.

“While other jurisdictions are falling behind, Alberta continues to step up – leading the way in housing construction, cutting red tape and delivering results that matter. This is what it looks like when a government does what it takes to get shovels in the ground and homes built,” says Nixon.

Calgary and Edmonton are on course to break last year’s records for housing starts, increasing by 32 per cent and 29 per cent, respectively.

Housing starts in Grande Prairie were up by 112 per cent, while Red Deer rose by two per cent.
