Grant programs expected to bring more doctors to rural Alberta over the next two years
Citizens in rural Alberta will have access to more doctors and care teams as the provincial government announced they’ve brought in 74 medical residents to provide care and more clinics to expand staff over the next two years.
They’ve done so through a pair of grants that support medical resident physicians training in rural and remote communities and help primary care clinics across rural Alberta grow their teams.
This includes a $16-million Rural and Remote Family Medicine Resident Physician Bursary Pilot Program that supports 74 family medicine residents who are expected to begin working in rural Alberta between now and July 2027.
In addition, the Rural Team Recruitment Grant will provide $6 million over two years to help clinics hire additional health professionals, including nurses, pharmacists and physiotherapists. It will also help expand care teams.
