Alberta’s Crime Severity index for 2024 decreases 6.9 per cent

Aug 3, 2025 | 6:00 AM

The index tracking both the volume and seriousness of police-reported crimes in Alberta had a 6.9 per cent decrease in 2024 compared to 2023.

Statistics Canada says the Crime Severity Index in 2024 was the second lowest it has been since 2015, with 95 of the 147 jurisdictions measured seeing a decrease.

While small population jurisdictions fluctuate year-to-year, significant decreases in jurisdictions like Wetaskiwin, Strathmore and Red Deer are being reported.

In Alberta, the number one contributor to the CSI score is break & enters, which makes up 17.67 per cent of the scoring but had 875 fewer reported incidents in 2024.

Of the top 10 crimes that contributed to the index, two were violent offenses: assault and sexual assault, with both categories experiencing a reduction in 2024 of 653 and 273 fewer incidents reported respectively, compared to 2023.
