Southern Albertans to compete at Canada Summer Games

A group of high-level athletes is set to take part in a major national competition.

The Canada Summer Games take place in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, from August 8-25, 2025.

More than 4,000 athletes, coaches and managers will be at the event.

The Lethbridge region will be represented by 16 athletes, as well as four coaches and managers. They are:

  • Jinaye Shomachuk, Athlete – Athletics
  • Kimoya Edwards, Athlete – Athletics
  • Lauryn Morris (LaCrete, trains in Lethbridge) – Athletics
  • Laughlan Irish, Athlete – Athletics (representing BC)
  • Donna Branch, Manager – Basketball Women’s
  • Ella Tillsley (Diamond City), Athlete – Basketball Women’s
  • Pippa Gibb, Athlete – Basketball Women’s
  • Beckett Davis, Athlete – Box Lacrosse Men’s
  • Connor Duell, Athlete – Cycling – Mountain
  • Henry Clark, Athlete – Rugby Sevens Men’s
  • Keegan Brantner, Manager – Rugby Sevens Women’s
  • Madi Kutsch, Athlete – Rugby Sevens Women’s
  • Shanelle Mann, Athlete – Rugby Sevens Women’s
  • Aliya de Gruchy, Athlete – Swimming
  • Taylor Ginther, Athlete – Swimming
  • Wendy Nelson, Coach – Swimming
  • Corny Bergen, Athlete – Volleyball Men’s
  • Jessica Froese, Athlete – Wrestling
  • Shawn Daye-Finley, Coach – Wrestling
  • Thomas Ellis-Toddington, Athlete – Wrestling

Susan Eyemann, executive director of the Lethbridge Sport Council, says the Canada Summer Games are about more than just sport, but about making friends and connections from across the country.

She congratulated all of the locals who were able to reach this level.

“Earning a spot takes countless hours of disciplined training and a commitment to excellence. This event, Canada’s version of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, is a celebration of what happens on and off the field of play,” says Eyemann.

Rugby Sevens, Swimming, and Basketball will take place during week 1. Athletics, Box Lacrosse, Cycling, Volleyball, and Wrestling will take place during week 2.

Eyemann also gave a shout-out to Lethbridge’s Coby Iwaasa, who will not be competing at the Canada Summer Games as the racquetball player will instead be at The World Games in China around the same time.
