A major project is set to get underway next year in the Fort Macleod area.

The Town of Fort Macleod has announced Stage 1A of the Highway 3 realignment project.

On the eastern end of the community, Stage 1A will see the westbound lanes of Highway 3 twinned to the existing eastbound lanes, running from the Township Road 92 intersection to the Highway 2 junction.

It will realign approximately three kilometres of roadway and see the installation of new traffic signals at the intersections of Highways 2 and 3.

This is described as the first step in a long-term, multi-stage plan that will eventually see the eastbound and westbound lanes being rerouted to bypass Fort Macleod entirely.

The initiative has the support of Mayor Brent Feyter, who called it “transformative.”

“It’s a project that we’ve been advocating, as a town, for a number of years, to be able to create a safer entrance into the community, as well as more opportunity for economic development directly beside Highway 3,” says Feyter.

The Town touts the infrastructure upgrade as one that will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and unlock new opportunities for economic growth by opening up a large parcel of land in the community.

Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, said in a statement to LNN, “While there may be some temporary traffic impacts during construction, every effort will be made to minimize disruptions and keep traffic moving safely. This project will help ensure Fort Macleod remains a strong and vibrant hub for southern Alberta for years to come.”

Construction is set to commence in 2026.
