With many years behind the bench, Barclay Parneta hopes to take the Lethbridge Hurricanes to the top of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

The team has hired the 55-year-old as a Senior Advisor to General Manager Peter Anholt.

Parneta spent the last seven years as the G.M. of the Vancouver Giants, helping to lead the squad to the WHL postseason in all five years in which the playoffs were held. That includes securing a Western Conference Championship in 2019.

Anhold says Parneta is a great man with a great hockey mind.

“His experience and expertise in our league speaks for itself. He will help our management group by covering the Western Conference and advising us as we move through the season leading to the trade deadline,” says Anholt.

After a three-game stint with the Seattle Thunderbirds in 1986-87, Parnetta skated in the B.C. Hockey League for three years before taking his first scouting job with the Medicine Hat Tigers in 1989-90.

He then worked with the Tri-City Americans for 18 years between two stints, with roles including scout, development coach, head scout, and assistant general manager. Perneta also spent five seasons as an amateur scout for the St. Louis Blues and two with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Parneta has represented Team Canada White as the G.M. for the 2024 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, as well as the Management Lead for Team Canada Red at the 2023 tournament, and served on the Hockey Canada Advisory Committee between 2018-2025 for the U17, 18, and 20 levels.

Parneta says he is grateful for this new opportunity with the Hurricanes.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Peter Anholt and the Lethbridge Hurricanes for the opportunity to join such a respected organization as Special Advisor,” said Parneta. “It is a privilege to work alongside a true hockey professional like Peter and the outstanding staff he has assembled. I look forward to learning from their collective experience and contributing my own to help drive the continued success of the Hurricanes.”

The Canes are gearing up for the start of training camp, which gets underway on August 28.
