A local athlete has made it to the top of the podium at the Canada Summer Games (CSG).

Jinaye Shomachuk won a gold medal in women’s hammer throw on Tuesday, Aug. 19, launching the item 58.8 metres.

That is over five metres farther than second-place Aisling Tcheutchoua of Quebec.

Shomachuk stated in her bio that her goal is to break the record for women’s hammer throw at the CSG, currently 61.44 metres, which was set by B.C.’s Alexa Botsis in 2022.

Although she did not achieve that feat at the CSG, Athletics Canada lists her all-time personal best throw at 66.45 metres.

Shomachuk, 21, is part of the Chinook Track and Field Team, and also competes with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Earlier this year, she finished second in women’s weight throw at the 2025 USPORTS Nationals.

The Pronghorns named Shomachuk their Female Athlete of the Year in 2025.
