Officials in a southern Alberta First Nation are looking into what caused a leak of carbon monoxide at a local hockey rink.

Around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20, the Piikani Nation said that people reported feeling unwell while attending the Piikani Nation Multi-Purpose Centre.

It was determined that the cause was a buildup of carbon monoxide in the facility.

The building was quickly evacuated, and EMS tended to those in the area.

The Piikani Nation said in a statement Wednesday evening that some people required hospitalization.

“First and foremost, Piikani Chief, its Council and arena staff offer their best wishes for the well being of all involved,” said the First Nation.

Technicians have been called in to conduct a full review of the mechanical operations at the arena.

The First Nation said in last night’s statement that it will review prevention protocols, but had no further updates Thursday morning.
