Alberta women’s teams bringing the heat at Canada Summer Games

Aug 22, 2025 | 11:09 AM

Everyone is watching Alberta’s Women’s teams as baseball, volleyball, soccer and wrestling are charging into the medal rounds at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Alberta’s Women’s Baseball Team has been dominant, locking up the top spot in their pool with an undefeated 4-0 record.

“Being at Canada Summer Games, representing Team Alberta was a big opportunity for us, we came in strong on our bats and our defence has been on point this entire tournament,” said Kamryn Kutzner (Okotoks), an outfielder for Team Alberta Women’s Baseball. “We’re going to use Friday to rest our bodies and then keep on doing what we’re doing, it seems like it’s working!”

In the first-ever appearance of Women’s Baseball at the Games, Alberta has yet to play a full seven innings, having outpaced every opponent by mercy rule. The team is set to face Nova Scotia in Saturday’s semi-final.

In a much more dramatic finish to their pool play, Women’s Soccer drew 1-1 with Newfoundland, sending the match to penalty kicks to decide the top seed. Alberta converted four attempts to take the shootout 4-2 and claim first place in their pool.

“We didn’t just play a game, we fought for eery second until the very last kick. When it came down to the last shot, it wasn’t just my foot, it was the whole team behind it,” said Ivy Kunn (Airdrie), who scored the winning penalty kick.

With the top spot, Alberta earned a direct bye to Saturday’s semi-final.

Women’s Volleyball secured the number one seed heading into the quarter finals after a 3-1 win over British Columbia on Thursday. They’ll return to the court on Friday.

“Coming off of a long game last night, we started a little slow today but we battled well and really felt like we were a team again in the fourth set,” said Brooke Fermaniuk (Calgary), an outside hitter for Team Alberta Women’s Volleyball. “We’re all very motivated to be here. We want to win, we want to bring competition and do really well. We’re coming into the play off rounds prepared and ready to battle.”

Men’s Volleyball also advanced to the quarter finals, finishing pool play with a 2-1 record. They’ll face Newfoundland on Friday.

Men’s Box Lacrosse capped off their round robin with a 5-2 win over Nova Scotia, finishing with a 2-2 record. They’ll meet Saskatchewan in Friday’s quarter finals.

In golf, Alberta tees up for the final round at Bally Haly Golf and Country Club on Friday. Jalen Apedoe (Calgary) is one stroke back of a medal in the men’s individual standings, while Kali Yeske (Calgary) sits just two shots behind on the women’s side.

Men’s Wrestling heads into the bronze medal match on Friday after a strong 5-1 run through the tournament. Women’s Wrestling will face Ontario Friday morning, with a spot in the gold medal final on the line for later in the day.

Due to the rain delay earlier in the week, Men’s Softball is set for another triple-header on Friday. The results will determine whether the team advances to Saturday’s semi-final.

Artistic Swimming and Diving continue in the pool, as athletes continue their quest to the podium.

After a rest day, Athletics and Mountain Biking return to action on Friday with more medal opportunities on the horizon.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“This is such a fun routine and it’s a fun sport to be competing in. We bounce off of each other with our energy and our goal was to reach our full degree of difficulty, which we did today, so we’re going to keep focusing on that and performing more.” – Jasmine Peloquin (Calgary), Team Alberta Artistic Swimming, on competing with Kyla Williams (Calgary) in the Women’s Duet, where they are currently ranked second going into the medal flight on Saturday.

“With my home club, I get a lot of shots, but it helps you with learning and developing so to come into this tournament and play these games, I feel like I’ve been prepared and ready for the next one. This was a big win for us, coming off of two losses is really important for us and going into the next set of play offs, I think we’re ready, we’re prepared and we want to go for gold.” – Charlie Graham (St. Albert), goalie for Team Alberta Men’s Box Lacrosse, stopping 51 shots in the 5-2 win over Nova Scotia to wrap the preliminary round.
