A local government representative is flying across the pond to learn more about how nuclear energy could be implemented back home.

Nathan Neudorf, who is both the MLA for Lethbridge-East and the Minister of Affordability and Utilities, will be in London, U.K., for approximately two weeks. He will leave Canada on Wednesday, August 27, and return home on September 11.

He says he will connect with members of established nuclear industries and promote Alberta’s energy sector.

“Alberta’s government is working hard to secure an affordable, reliable and sustainable energy future and nuclear can play a key role. Gatherings like this one are an excellent opportunity to connect with international partners and I look forward to learning more about the potential of this technology and how it can fit into Alberta’s energy mix,” says Neudorf.

Neudorf will attend the World Nuclear Symposium, partake in the Canada-UK Nuclear Day 2025, tour nuclear facilities, and meet with utility industry leaders and experts to discuss investment opportunities and share common energy challenges, solutions and technical developments.

The minister will travel with two staff members. Mission expenses will be posted on the travel and expense disclosure page.

He will also have a few days of personal time in the U.K. at his own expense.

The Alberta Government announced earlier this week that it is launching a public engagement campaign to explore the potential for nuclear energy in the province. You can access the online survey here until September 25, 2025.

Premier Danielle Smith said it could include building small modular reactors that power oilsands facilities, as well as larger nuclear power plants that would supply energy to the grid.
