Expect to see busy roads around the University of Lethbridge (U of L) and Lethbridge Polytechnic on Monday, as the city’s largest post-secondary campuses are set to be full.

Students who will be living in residence will move into their new homes on Monday, September 1.

Laura Correal, Associate Director of Housing Services, says it is always an exciting day when families come in and get their students settled in for the academic year.

“It’s also a pretty emotional day because for many, this may be their first time living away from home, so we’re there to help with that transition and make things as comfortable as possible for them,” says Correal.

New Student Orientation (NSO) also takes place in the first week of September.

It has historically been a single-day event, but this year, it will run for four days from September 2 to 5.

Kendra Fuglerud, Assistant Registrar for Curriculum and Student Records, says the extra time will give students a better opportunity to get acclimated to campus and post-secondary life.

“We’ve been wanting to expand programming for many years, and the academic schedule afforded us the opportunity to extend NSO to four days,” says Fuglerud. “This format allows students to attend more than one faculty meet and greet — a great bonus for students in combined degrees or who are curious about exploring another program, major, or minor down the road.”

U of L students can attend multiple meet-and-greet events with faculty members and schools, scavenger hunts, campus tours, open advising sessions, learn transit tips, and get the ins and outs on how to live with a roommate, and more.

The first day of classes is Monday, Sept. 8.

NSO will continue to be a one-day event at Lethbridge Polytechnic, and it is scheduled for Tuesday, September 2.

Kicking off at 8:00 a.m., they say it will help new and returning students to feel supported, confident and connected before the first day of classes.

“From guided campus tours to academic workshops, each opportunity is here to help you build skills, find your way around and feel part of something bigger,” reads a media release from Lethbridge Polytechnic.

It continues to say that, “It all leads up to New Student Orientation on Sept. 2, featuring program-specific orientations, an institutional welcome, a barbecue lunch hosted by the Lethbridge Polytechnic Students’ Association and Student Services Fair. Along the way, you’ll meet faculty, employees, and fellow students and start building the relationships that will carry you through your time on campus.”

Dr. Kenny Corscadden, Vice-President of Academics and Research, says they are offering three new programs this fall in trades, health care and kinesiology.

The first day of classes is Wednesday, Sept. 3.
